Meet Dr. Warren Wong

Dr. Warren Wong has dedicated his career to improving care for older adults. He founded the geriatrics service at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii and designed "Senior Segmentation," an innovative strategy being implemented for Kaiser Permanente's one million older adult members. The model tailors distinct services to four different segments of the older adult population based on their care needs.

Early in his career, Dr. Wong was a physician at On Lok Senior Health Services in San Francisco’s Chinatown. On Lok is the original model from which the nationally renowned PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) emerged. Later in his career, he was a physician leader for Kaiser Permanente’s Care Management Institute. He played a pivotal role in developing palliative care, nursing homes, and home visit programs. 

Dr. Wong spent a year as a Merck Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, where he focused on redesigning healthcare systems to better integrate community-based services for frail older adults with complex needs. He went on to serve as Associate Medical Director for Complex Care at Hawaii Health Partners, the state's first Accountable Care Organization.

Dr. Wong is on the Executive Council for AARP, Hawaii. He is active in promoting home and community-based care. Dr. Wong is also a Clinical Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine. His work earned him the Hawaii Pacific Gerontologic Society Na Lima Kokua Award for Community Service. His mantra is, "The caregiver is the most important person in a frail older adult's daily life."
